We've all seen the beginning of Green Hill Zone Act 1 countless times over the years. Perhaps one could even say you've got every last detail of those first few seconds of Sonic 1's iconic opening stage memorized. Well then, you shouldn't have trouble spotting anything that doesn't belong, right?
The rules are straightforward:
This hack (which took about a month to complete) was directly inspired by the Japanese indie game The Exit 8 by Kotake Create. I was fascinated by its simple premise yet surprisingly engaging gameplay loop (pun intended), and wanted to try my hand at making a Sonic rendition of it. However, due to the more colorful nature of Sonic, this hack leans a lot more into absurd/entertaining rather than horror/creepy. Still, I hope you enjoy it!
Note: If the ambient soundscape annoys you, pause the game to toggle it in the pause menu (although I recommend keeping it on for the atmosphere).
16:9 Widescreen Edition (Extra Download): This is a version of the ROM hack supporting 16:9 widescreen (playable in something like ClownMDEmu with "Widescreen Hack" set to 10). It was a last-minute bonus project I did after the SHC submission deadline got extended by a few days, so it didn't receive a lot of playtesting, but it runs mostly fine from my own tests. Still, the main 4:3 version is the intended, polished, optimized, and fully tested way to play this game!
File Type: rom/mega-drive
File Size: 3.52 MB
"Winners don't use Kega" and Sonic.exe reading a news paper. Also, this is the best hack ever.
I was playing on Kega when I got that
Winners don't use Kega
the lowercase letters in the zone titles makes it so unsettling and cool at the same time
it's the best so far in my opinion (also the falling sprite ACTUALLY looking down instead of at us in the screenshots + gameplay)

This is such a brilliant concept! Adapting The Exit 8 into Green Hill Zone is pure genius. Spotting all those anomalies is incredibly fun and addictive. Amazing work!
Very fun hack! Even better is that there's a counter after you beat the game, so that you can check how many anomalies you spotted. My favorites are whenever a ring doesn't play a sound. Screws me up every time.
Man, playing this hack I almost scared myself 3 times, but with the lights going out, during the boss fight and the credits, I thought I was really going to get a scare or something, really good hack.
that was so much fun, i was really immersed
I will never look at GHZ1 the same ever again...
It takes Selbi to put the Screwy on Sonic.
This hack is ideal for those who love Sonic AND have some degree of OCD. Otherwise there is no way you can beat this, because there always be One! Tiny! Detail! you will easily miss.
I really enjoyed the vibes from this one! However, I didn't really like having to restart the entire game back to Act 0 again just because I missed one anomaly smh.
That's the same rule as with the source material, The Exit 8. I think it's better that way, because it makes things get increasingly more tense. Plus, this way there's a bigger chance for players to experience more anomalies (because previously discovered ones are removed from the pool).
this is like one of the coolest hacks i've ever seen. played it with friends in vc and it felt so vindicating after memorizing all the damn foliage in the level and checking every time eventually getting to shout out STOP STOP STOP THE BUSH IS MISSING. it was also hilarious when we were analyzing every little thing, second guessing it all, then just the most blatantly obvious thing ever happens. and its also so cool when you start second guessing every little thing even when its normal.
"Winners don`t use Kega" award, genuise hack and the most entertaining one.
I had a lot of fun playing this one.
Now that's a really fun hack! Green Hill knowledge test - not bad!
I had a lot of fun with this... but if I can point out one thing. Sonic's springing sprite has no stripe (like the original game). Technically NOT an anomaly since the original game looked like that, but I wonder... does he ever have the stripe in that animation in an anomaly? Curious...
I spent more time with this hack than any other in the retro category. It's a simple concept executed well. The only suggestion I have, if you do decide to add anything to it in the future, would be a message telling you what anomaly you missed if you incorrectly exit the stage to the right. Fun hack though and I would recommend!
The Exit 8 doesn't tell you about which anomaly you have missed either. I believe that adds to the game, knowing there was something there but not being sure about what it was. It tickles that human instinct to know the unknown, and hopefully urge the player to keep playing.
I can agree that this ROM Hack is indeed luxurious
cool hack, heck I would love an expansion with more anomalies
keep up the good work
this hack is VERY VERY VERY good i got several of my friends to lose their minds over green hill zone
I've played the exit 8 before and i love this recreation. btw i think you forgot to remove the game over timer (then i immediately realized it was an anomaly lol)

Plays nicely on my Genesis Mini. Installled it through Hakchi. Unfortunately, the default M2Engage emulator that it uses doesn't like it, it just outputs a black screen. Was able to load it by setting it to Gen Plus GX
I've been informed that this game sadly doesn't seem to work with Regen (and possibly some other less accurate emulators). I apologize for that, that's on me. Though strangely enough, it works on Gens, Kega, BlastEm, ClownMDEmu, and even real hardware, so no idea why Regen specifically complains.
Either way, if you run into a Checksum Error when booting the game, try a different emulator!
EDIT: Okay, turns out this is Regen's "Autofix Checksum" option. Disable that and it should work again.
